Medical Ethics and Professionalism
PBI ethics protection courses are a valuable resource for regulatory boards, professional associations and training institutions. We focus on providing a comprehensive educational system that prepares professionals to return to practice.
As part of our philosophy of education and growth, our courses follow a process for examining the core etiologies of violations to draw out important insight and enact meaningful change. We help establish protection strategies for the ethical practice of medicine - and it works. Our goal is to provide an effective program that helps assure consumers and the community that safe and ethical professionals are allowed to practice.
Who Should Attend This Course?
This is a cost effective program that allows participants to participate from the privacy of their homes or offices with no travel or lodging expenses.
At the request of regulatory boards, this course was developed to fulfill the remedial education requirements for professionals who have been investigated and/or disciplined for ethical violations. Others may benefit from participation as a measure of preventive education. This course is not a replacement for standard bioethics courses or general ethics courses in medical school or other health care professions.
For some, this course is a mandated requirement for continuing to practice or to have the option of returning to practice following a suspension or other disciplinary action. Course participants may have breached an ethical code or violated their state’s administrative practice act- rule or law, or may have found themselves in a situation in which their actions or lack of actions were perceived by those in authority , to constitute a violation or possible violation. In any case, the outcome has been, in part or in whole, to participate in an ethics course.
What Is This Course About? This course is designed to address administrative and ethical violations including transgressions of codes of ethics, state administrative code and Medical Practice Acts. The truth is, any professional would benefit from the educational experience of a PBI course.
The PBI ethics course covers issues like:
|Violation of privileged communication or breach of confidentiality||Fraudulent or misleading advertising or professional status|
|Fraudulent or deceptive services||Attempting to obtain a medical license by fraud or misrepresentation|
|Using one’s name to cover the actions of another not licensed to practice||Failure to disclose financial interest in a referral entity|
|Falsification of patient records or patient logs||Misleading or deceptive communication with regulatory boards|
The faculty for this course are selected by PBI and approved by the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine Office of Continuing Medical Education.
Are Boundary Violations Covered?
This course does not cover the specific issue of professional sexual misconduct, sexual impropriety or sexual violations which are more thoroughly addressed in other Professional Boundaries, Inc. courses. However, a violator in this area may gain some understanding and insight into the underlying dynamics that might have triggered this behavior.
What Makes This Program Effective?
The PBI Medical Ethics program has been developed by experienced and talented faculty members from across the United States with experience and expertise in ethics violations, boundary issues, and treatment of impaired practitioners. The focus is in helping first-time ethics and boundary violators discover the underlying issues that led to their transgression and to develop a plan of action that will prevent a re-violation in the future. This will assist in one’s return to safe ethical professional practice.
Why Are There Multiple Educational Formats?
This course utilizes a combination of reading content, self-exploratory reading assignments, perusals of your state’s administrative statutes pertaining to your specific violation and a series of discussions with faculty and other Professionals. This allows for learning through multiple facets and an opportunity to process and articulate one’s areas of vulnerabilities so that meaningful and lasting corrective action can occur.
