This is a concise overview of the subject of professional misconduct derived from PBI's flagship live program, the PBI Professional Boundary Course (PB-24), produced by Professional Boundaries, Inc. and provided by the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
The Primer-20 course is written with two purposes in mind: to serve as an independent, telephonically enhanced CME/CE activity to reduce your risk for boundary violations, and to better prepare the reader for participation in the comprehensive version of the PBI Professional Boundary Course (PB-24).

This course requires completion of readings, assignments, a post-test and course evaluation.
Pre-approval: Many regulatory boards require that board ordered CME/CE programs for disciplinary purposes receive pre-approval. If you are taking this course to fulfill such a requirement, please contact your board or regulatory body for approval. If a boundary course is required, most boards expect a live (face-to-face) classroom experience such as the 3-day program, the PBI Professional Boundary Course (PB-24).

What Do I Need For This Course?
Required Software & Hardware
After registration, the course material is available online for you to view or download. The course material is accessible from Windows, OS X, GNU/Linux and any other operating systems capable of viewing Adobe Acrobat files. If you do not have direct access to a personal computer, we will mail you the textbook portion of the course material and it is possible to download and print additional materials and participate from a library terminal or similar remote access.

Professional Boundaries & Violations:
Primer-20 Teleconference Course
The goal of this course is to prevent boundary and ethics violations by developing and implementing a Stratified Boundary/Ethics Protection Plan to protect patients, practice, and the professional.
With this class, participants will learn to:
- To increase awareness to the spectrum of boundary crossings which place a professional at risk for a boundary violation or an accusation of misconduct.
- To obtain a basic understanding of boundary theory and the dynamics which underlie boundary violations in order to assure that it does not occur or happen again.
- To develop a vigilance for early warning signs of potential boundary problems with patients to prevent their occurrence.
- To be able to gain insight into professional risk factor and personal vulnerabilities by relating the information gained from the course to a boundary crossing or violation which you may have experience.
- To understand the multiple sources of professional power and how such power can be knowingly / unknowingly abused, resulting in a violation
- To develop a Protection Plan to safeguard your practice, patients, and yourself.
